As highlighted in a recent Canberra Times article featuring data from Tendertrace, the current state of government procurement in Australia shows a distinct concentration of spending among a limited number of suppliers. This pattern not only challenges the growth of smaller enterprises but also raises concerns about the transparency and fairness of public sector procurement processes.
The Tendertrace data featured in the article underscores a stark imbalance: while 150 vendors were summoned from the existing cloud marketplace panel, a significant 311 pre-qualified vendors were left without contracts. Further compounding the issue, the top one percent of suppliers on the management services panel held 28 percent of the total contract value.
Abu Odigie, CEO of Tendertrace, notes, “The cost, administrative burden, and complexity of panel applications often create significant barriers for SMEs, limiting supplier diversity. While panels are designed to enhance efficiency, our data shows they can inadvertently favor large enterprises and multinationals with the resources to navigate these processes more effectively.”
